Take on the world from a whole new perspective

Personal Development for Introverts, Atheists, LGBTQ+ Individuals & Vegans

If you identify as any one of the above and are having difficulty being open, honest and authentic within your community, close circle of friends or members of your family, for whatever reason, then join The Public Server as we break through the barriers preventing you from ‘coming out’, as it were, and being the unapologetic, genuine person you are; someone worthy of respect, dignity, acceptance and excellence.

You’re Not Alone!

Is your fear of rejection, judgment and ostracism so profound that you have lost the ability to ‘just be yourself’? Have you been so concerned with how others might perceive you that the ‘real you‘ is kept hidden from the world?

Evolutionary psychology explains that being banished or exiled from ‘the tribe’ would mean almost certain death for our ancestors. So, it can be argued that our very survival necessitates a level of acceptance by society. Taken to its extreme, gross violations of our social contract can result in imprisonment, which is ultimately the act of excluding an individual from civilised society due to an unforgivable transgression of the rules governing its people.

Breaking the law is one thing, but when the general sentiment of those around us intimates that any sort of deviation from what is considered ‘normal‘, ‘popular‘ or ‘acceptable‘ is somehow ‘wrong‘, ‘repulsive‘ or ‘indefensible‘, then the guilt and shame we experience is enough to get us to reject who we are in favour of how we ought to be, so as not to be ridiculed or shunned.

Hate, bigotry and bullying seem to infect society, even to this day. Although institutions and communities are working hard to educate others in an effort to eradicate the oppression of vulnerable groups, The Public Server (TPS) aims to take on a more individual approach to the problem.

Specifically, TPS’ focus is on those of us who have been unable to open up about our true, authentic selves out of fear that we will be judged, ostracised or attacked for saying, doing or being something that might not be well-received by those around us.

Sometimes we do this to ourselves – letting the world use us as its personal doormat because we’re too afraid to speak up; crippled by our own insecurity. Other times the threat is very, very real and we put on this ‘mask‘ for our own protection, never really knowing who amongst us will be particularly willing to do us harm (whether physical, mental or emotional) just for being different.

You are not alone…

The Public Server Constitution

We aim to motivate and inspire all those who feel trapped, helpless and confused:

  1. seek the tools they need to get out of their own way;
  2. find the courage they require to take action (despite their fears); and
  3. discover the fire they have within to become the best version of themselves

… so that they can promote the best version of society, and do so from a position of strength.

Why Personal Development for Introverts, Atheists, LGBTQ+ Individuals and Vegans, in particular?

The Public Server supports anyone who feels the need to hide who they really are and live in the shadows, afraid that their friends, family or peers would not accept them if they were to be open and honest.

We have found that people who identify as any one (or all) of these categories tend to lack the support they deserve from the community within which they initially find themselves.

We consider ‘introverts‘ our primary audience, as they naturally tend to keep to themselves and are often taken advantage of because their fear of conflict, confrontation and humiliation, as well as their avoidance of it, usually results in their interests being sacrificed in favour of the desires of somebody else. They generally struggle to express themselves properly in difficult situations, so would rather politely agree than have to endure the torture of defending their point of view.

As for being atheist, LGBTQ and/or vegan, this is not currently the status quo in society (yet) and often requires one to ‘come out‘, rather than simply ‘be’.

As society progresses, we believe that there won’t actually be a status quo; at least not regarding these three categories. In other words, we should work towards a world in which it is not just automatically assumed that one believes in some sort of deity, is heterosexual / cisgender and/or participates in the systematic exploitation of animals.

Here’s to you:

The passive introvert – may you never again let the world steal your confidence, treat you like a doormat or make you feel like shit for being so outrageous as to put your own interests first.

The rational atheist – may you never again let the world demand that you believe in its extraordinary, unfalsifiable claims on faith alone, command that you respect its ridiculous antiquated ideologies and insist that you extend to it unjustifiable preference over any competing constitutional right.

They who identify as LGBTQ  may you never again let the world make you feel ashamed for being who you are, as ‘lesser‘ than anybody else or, in any way, shape or form, make you believe that you are an abomination, unworthy of the respect and dignity you deserve.

The passionate vegan – may you never again let the world silence the voice of the voiceless nor let the world hide from the atrocities it does not wish to witness, but is more than willing to support.

And, finally, may the world work towards becoming more critical in its thinking, more ethical in its practices and more compassionate in its interactions.

You Have Our Permission!

Our vision, here at The Public Server, is to inspire as many people as possible to challenge their perceptions of reality, question the status quo and take action without fear of any imagined consequences.

We believe in Leading by Learning; leveraging that which we already know and using it as the foundation upon which we can add more value to the world while continuously discovering and learning new ideas.

As we learn and grow, so shall you

It is our mission to help everyone crippled by years of defective programing find their voice and finally put themselves first.

Remember that Proactivity > Perfectionism

so get rid of this notion of ‘perfect’.

The only reason these words were ever written is because ‘perfection‘ made way for ‘action’.

Where things go and what should be said, along with many other factors under consideration, are constantly evolving aspects of who we are and who we want to be.

But we need to accept things for as they are now, realize that nothing is permanent and acknowledge that we are all allowed to change our minds as we are presented with new information.

Nobody is perfect, and that should come as fantastic news

The first step towards growth is to just get started.

It is time we moved aside our egos, faced our fears and started putting ourselves first.

So, if you are fed up with living a life of mediocrity, bending to the whim of others and jumping to the false emergencies that somehow supersede your own and find yourself wondering ‘why‘ that is and ‘what‘ to do about it, then join The Public Server as we introduce you to concepts that will challenge the way you currently think, inspire you to take action without needing permission, urge you to start prioritizing yourself, even at the expense of others (shock and horror!), accept the journey for whatever it is and, ultimately,

Be Moved to Matter!

For ‘what if‘ never knew and ‘should have‘ had regrets while ‘fuck it‘ was making happen that which scares us half to death.

Feeling Lost, Alone or Dejected?

Mental health is something The Public Server takes very seriously and, if you find that you are not coping with your circumstances or notice that ‘something isn’t quite right’ and have been unable to find solutions to your predicaments on your own, then these pages are no substitute for reaching out to a licensed professional.

The Public Server’s focus is on the presentation of ideas and the introduction to concepts that are designed to stimulate inspiration, motivate action and hopefully reveal some unearthed insights that end up changing your life.

We understand that it can seem almost impossible, at times, to rise above the turmoils of existence and find fulfillment in our lives.

The Public Server is a place for like-minded individuals to find community when it feels like there is nowhere left to turn.

Originally geared exclusively towards introverts, TPS is now primarily dedicated to those who have lost themselves in a society that feels the need to impose its prejudices, ignorance and antiquated beliefs on everyone else.

This is personal development for anyone who is tired of trying to live up to the perceived expectations of others, those who have been living in the shadows for far too long and everyone who just needs some help becoming the authentic person hidden within who is begging to be unleashed.

some of us have been living a lie for so long, we don’t even know who the hell we are anymore!

The Public Server is right for you if:

You identify as an 'introvert'

Firstly, it is important that we do not put ourselves ‘in a box’, give ourselves a label or, in any way, limit our abilities (or even prevent ourselves from taking a particular course of action) due to past experience, the opinions of others or a perceived personality or trait. That being said, for the sake of brevity, going forward we will adopt the term ‘introvert’ for those who resonate with any or all of the points below.

Side-note: I highly recommend the book Personality Isn’t Permanent by Benjamin Hardy; a great addition to any self-help junkie’s library, which addresses the fact that our decisions shape our personality, not genetics or some other external factor outside of our control.

You Suffer from Severe Social Anxiety

For as long as we can remember, we have functioned best in smaller (familiar) crowds or on our own. In fact, we often find ourselves feeling acutely aware of ourselves in the presence of others (especially those we find attractive or believe hold a position of authority above our own); judging ourselves for what we might do or say at any given moment, overthinking about how others must be perceiving us right now, playing out every negative scenario in our head – every unfavorable experience we can think of — and then immediately becoming awkward and shutting down. It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy that further ingrains our belief of personal inadequacy, destroys our confidence and depletes our energy whenever we find ourselves interacting with other human beings.

Side-note: I highly recommend the book The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck by Mark Manson, specifically the chapter where he discusses the Feedback Loop from Hell and the irony of how our negative emotions, left unchecked, often cause a cascade of further negative emotions merely because of our inability to properly process, deal with and accept those original negative emotions.

Extended Periods of Socialization Drains Your Energy

An extension of the point above, long periods (which duration is different for different people) in the company of others usually has the effect of depleting (rather than increasing) our energy levels; especially in instances where we experience any sort of conflict, confrontation, insult, slight or embarrassment. We much prefer bouts of contact followed by extended periods of isolation to replenish our energy stores.

Side-note: depending on the person, being isolated for too long can often lead to depression accompanied by a sustained low-energy, so, although we like being alone, we also find that we need the human interaction from time-to-time.

You Find that You Overthink and Self-Destruct

Have you ever been in a situation where you have a solution to a particular problem, want to express an opinion, wish to share information or ought to take a particular course of action, yet hesitate? And, in that hesitation, you feel a switch flip? This is the unfortunate moment at which the floodgates of ‘worst-case-scenarios’ open in our minds; self-doubt creeps in, our insecurities flare up and our energy and motivation disappear. So, instead of speaking up or taking action, the stream of overwhelming information coursing through our brain convinces us otherwise and we allow the noise of our insecure mind to drown out the part of us which is desperate to just be heard.

You Hold Back Until Everything is Just Right

Ah, the classic case of perfectionism. The best excuse for dreamers who do nothing; the procrastinator’s copout. We often have the grandest of plans; imagining, fantasizing and picturing ourselves doing the most fantastical things. And some of these things we could do and should pursue, however our expectations of ourselves hold us back. Sometimes we go as far as thinking about this thing all the time. We write it in our dream journal, we research everyone else making it their reality and sometimes we even dip our toes in the water. But we never seem to make progress or we just plain give up.

You Worry Too Much About How Other People Perceive You

The glue holding the previous 5 points together. I believe, that if you resonate with any of the above, it ultimately comes down to this aspect of yourself right here. Somewhere along the line we let the world influence the thoughts and opinions we hold, the choices we make and the actions we take to such an extent that it has essentially paralyzed us, crippled our spirit and destroyed our ability to trust in our own reasoning and properly assert ourselves in any given situation.

We have let ourselves become doormats to be walked all over, fail to stand up for ourselves when we are being knocked down and elect to keep quiet when we have something to say.

Why?

Because of fear.

The fear that we might say or do something that someone else disagrees with or the fear that we might express an opinion that someone else finds offensive or the fear that we might share information that is incorrect or in some way, shape or form exposes us as ‘the fool we actually are‘.

People-pleasing is so much more destructive than we think. It is a big topic that will be covered often precisely because it is so pervasive, invasive and insidious. It can cause a ripple-effect of destruction throughout every facet of our lives and should not be dismissed or taken lightly.

The Man Behind the Madness

Hey,

My name is Bradley Jay Dorfan.

You may not know me (yet), but I’m the face behind the Public Server.

When I conceived the Public Server, I had two overarching goals in mind; I wanted to help as many people as I could reach find peace, harmony and fulfillment in life as well as, simultaneously, be able to use this as a platform to help me provide peace, harmony and fulfillment in life for myself and my family. I want to Be Moved to Matter (the Public Server’s slogan) and I want others to, likewise, Be Moved to Matter!

To inspire confidence in the reader

BE MOVED TO MATTER

THE IDEA BEHIND THE PUBLIC SERVER

I believe there are two essential shortcomings of most people. That is:

1. their inability to take meaningful action in their lives (BE MOVED); and

2. Their lost-potential in making any meaningful impact in the world (TO MATTER).

Our default setting is ease and comfort rather than challenge and growth.

At the Public Server, we understand how difficult it can be to manage our lives, hold a steady job, pay the bills and come out at the end of the month, year or decade intact, let alone have the energy to learn a new skill, build some positive habits and make a difference in the world.

It’s scary, it’s uncertain and it seems impossible.

PLAN, PROCEED, PROGRESS & PROSPER

  • PLAN – the selection of an aspiration and formulation of means to it’s achievement;
  • PROCEED – the initiation of an endeavour or chosen course of action;
  • PROGRESS – the election to course-correct, change direction or make adjustments to the plan as well as improve technique, gain momentum and endeavour to keep spirits high;
  • PROSPER – the realisation of one’s desire, as well as attendance on its maintenance or refinement; and the expression of gratitude for all accomplished before embarking on the next pursuit.

However, I also believe that, with positive reinforcement and developing the right attitude; making some small adjustments to our daily routine, finding time to take care of ourselves as well as do everything in our power to provide for ourselves and our family and, possibly, discover a way to build a life that gives us more time for ourselves and our family (as opposed to time for our boss, business, colleagues and employees); we can find peace, harmony and fulfillment in life! We can be moved to matter! We can

and we must!

My mantra is

#Plan #Proceed #Progress #Prosper

and I recite it in my head every time I lose hope, or motivation or feel the fear and uncertainty of it all take over like a wave trying to crush and drown me…

I close my eyes and I say those four simple words over and over and over again…

until all the noise and the negativity stops and I can focus.

This mantra is based on the principle that, as long as you know what you want, understand why its important to you, believe that it is possible and figure out how you’re going achieve it;  make the decision to get going and recognise that you can learn along the way; are committed to being consistent, willing to make the necessary sacrifices and prepared to do whatever it takes to get it done; and promise to appreciate where you were, what you’ve accomplished and all those who supported you through it all; then there is absolutely nothing that can stop you and no limit to your potential.

It is by no means easy but, if it’s possible, then thats all it takes.

We believe in you, we support you and we want to see you succeed.

#Plan #Proceed #Progress #Prosper

Be Moved to Matter

The Four Main Tenets of TPS

The key to success in any endeavour is work. That is to say, effort consistently applied over a period of time in furtherence of a worthwhile objective.

And, when we embark on a journey of self-improvement, there are four key areas we ought to focus on in order to forge the person within us that is worthy of achieving greatness.

To begin, we need to work on restoring our mindset, rejuvinating our health, strengthening our relationships and pursuing our ultimate goal in life.

It all begins with a single step in the right direction.
